With the temperatures now around zero on most days. And out comes the first phase of winter riding…knee warmers, wool socks, and of course the old school Roach Indy vest for winter riding. Knowing how winter was last year other questions come to mind. Do I keep the current mountain bike the Samurai rolling or do I put it to rest for the winter? Sure the Samurai is fun but when it gets colder there isn’t as much to ride…

The Work Bench….the place where I solve problems. The spot where some times a part will sit for a long time while I wait for a creative solution is found. The place where I fabricate true solutions not just throw it out. It smells of glue, oil, Mineral Spirits and Beer. Never clean and covered it metal shavings. Though sometimes all it is is just the place to rest the post ride beer.

Earlier this year while cleaning up my Chromag Stylus frame which as we know had been stripped for the mistress build. It was put aside for a future rebuild as there is just something special about it. It can do DH, ride xc, hit the pump tracks and berms on the same day. So while cleaning it had that moment of foreboding as you spot something that has you start worrying. What I had spotted that started the foreboding was…

In the quest to keep costs down I have asked over the years what others used to keep their bike chains running smoothly. Heard of everything from Olive Oil to Chainsaw Bar oil. After years of trying various types of lube, I have been using this formulation for a number of years. And will share the formula for my dirtbag chain lube with the readers of The Mountain Bike Life. 1 Part Mineral Spirits 3 Parts Motor Oil 1 Large Plastic…

Whats in your SUV feature

Like anyone who rides bikes there is always the endless discussion of gear, bikes, and what do you carry in your pack. This year we replaced our Passat with a SUV for reasons that are far more numerous to explain. Yet in the end ended up with a vehicle better suited to riding and adventure. But how much do we think and discuss what gear for the vehicle? Of course I hadn’t done anything even though I had thought about…

Dirtbag Energy Drink1

Companies make money by the dump truck load selling us drinks that are supposed to help us ride better. Especially during the hotter times of year or for those long 4 plus hour sessions. Sounds good in theory till you think of a couple of things. First that really most of what these are made from is not natural or we have no clue where it actually came from. The second thing is stuff like HEED and PowerAde costs lots…

In 5 weeks I will be riding 60k for my wife at Paul’s Dirty Enduro . The insidious thing called depression tried to take her away. A year later and things are better. I see more the woman I love. But one can’t forget that it will always be a work in progress. That while I am fortunate to have the wonderful in laws that I have many don’t have that family support. Many have nothing at all and no…

Pauls Dirty Enduro2

In the last week the 2014 Paul’s Dirty Enduro has been on my mind a fair bit. Especially after last years Paul’s Mud Enduro. This year has been more challenging then expected as there have been some significant events. And this has taken a toll on plans made for the year and such. As well as significantly taking away riding time and thoughts of any sort of a plan. And suddenly one realizes the event is 2 months away. And…

I Needed to build a new front wheel and re-inspired by The Serial Driller aka Dr Jon. Set out to keep it simple as I haven’t done it in a while the whole wheel building thing. So the first goal was to simply lace it up on the is first one without expert supervision.

This year due to numerous factors and as they say life, there has not been much racing at all for me. So last Saturday was a chance to get into a race put on by my buddy who runs  Substance Projects. Who put on a race at Northumberland Forest. Now I won’t bore you with a race report about a race as the Result speaks for itself.  Yep…32 minutes after the first guy to finish the 33K half MTB marathon. Chris Macfarlane…
